How do we choose the fibers and which ones are they?

While the biological value of the fibers is considered in the selection, the main focus is on their cultural importance.

The fibers included in this project are native cotton, ceibo, casca, cabuya, ichu, totora, junco, chambira, aguaje, yanchama, and bombonaje.

How and with whom do we work?

In collaboration with artisans and community actors from different regions, we gather and visually and orally record the life stories surrounding these fibers: from how they are obtained to the techniques and practices of weaving and dyeing, as well as the memories, symbols, and personal experiences associated with their work.

The objectives

With the registration of plant fibers, we aim to contribute to making visible the knowledge and materials that are part of the history and present of different communities in Peru.

Through a publication that articulates science, history, and testimonies, we highlight the relationship between fibers and ways of life in their territories of origin, and promote recognition of artisanal work as a living practice, closely linked to the landscape, ancestral knowledge, and natural cycles.
